Media regulator Ofcom has announced that Sound Digital, a consortium of Arqiva, Bauer and UTV Media, had won the country’s second digital radio platform or multiplex.
Its stations will include the return of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Radio which disappeared in 2008 when it turned into Absolute Radio.
Other stations to join the new platform are talkRADIO and talkSPORT2, both owned by UTV, Absolute 80s, Magic Mellow and Sunrise.
Some of the stations like Absolute 80s, home to the likes of Tina Turner, Blondie and Bon Jovi, will move across from the current single platform Digital One opening up extra capacity for new services there.
