Join in with the celebrations as the spectacular Shubbak Festival launches at venues across the capital.

Meaning ‘window’ in Arabic, Shubbak is a large-scale biennial festival of Arabic culture. It boasts events, exhibitions and performances courtesy of artists from across the Arab world.

Taking place at prestigious arts venues and spaces across the capital, some of the highlights include the Great Court at the British Museum being transformed into a stage for a drawing and choreography crossover event. Chelsea College of Arts hosts The Nomad, in which Dubai-based Khalid Shafar creates a modern architectural interpretation of the ‘Arish’, a traditional Gulf house. The Royal Opera House presents the premiere of Cities of Salt by Syrian composer Zaid Jabri. While Leighton House Museum hosts artist, turntablist and musician Raed Yassin as he performs a special electronic set designed especially for the surroundings.

There’s fun for all the family with Hafla on the Square at Chelsea Theatre, while the Young Vic explores the ongoing conflict in Syria with Now Is the Time to Say Nothing, an immersive experience made in collaboration with Reem Karssli.
