Covent Garden is to get a new luxury boutique hotel from Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro, with Westminster city council giving the green-light for the development.
Capital & Counties, advised by agent Gerald Eve, got the planning permission three months after lodging the plans for the 83-bedroom hotel.
De Niro, the star of Taxi Driver will be joint operator of the building which will also host a spa, members’ club and two restaurants.
It will be in six Victorian and early 20th-century buildings — three of them Grade II listed — in Wellington, Tavistock, Burleigh and Exeter Streets.
The actor has teamed up with BD Hotels and Capco for the project.
He and BD Hotels — founded by real estate gurus Ira Drukier and Richard Born — run the Greenwich in Manhattan’s fashionable Tribeca district. It is a huge hit with A-listers such as Jennifer Lawrence and Katy Perry.
It has been described as “a homely yet arty brick-built hub for moneyed hipsters looking to stay in a grand but relaxed New York home”.
Work on the development will start next year and finish in 2019.
