Barclays down: Bank 'has no idea when problems will be fixed or how many are affected' by debit card failuresComments Off on Barclays down: Bank 'has no idea when problems will be fixed or how many are affected' by debit card failures
Frustrated Barclays customers are still unable to use their debit cards due to a massive systems failure that has already lasted hours and could continue through the night.
The bank has no estimate for when the affected debit cards will work again, and no idea how many people have been experiencing problems.
Barclays said in a statement on Friday evening: “We’re aware that some customers are experiencing technical issues affecting debit card usage. We’re urgently investigating this and apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.”
Earlier today Barclays’ technical difficulties hit online and mobile banking, with users reporting they were locked out of their accounts and unable to access cash.
That problem has now been resolved.
Customers, many of whom had been caught out while trying to pay for goods, took to Twitter to bemoan the problems.
Kimberly Connor (@harmonylovelle) said: “@Barclays thanks to you for the 2nd time in 7 days I’ve been embarrassed when my card has declined.
“Nice to see you looking after customers.”
Andy Thornley (@scouser_andy) added: “Can’t use my @Barclays debit card. Says declined but have plenty in account. Luckily girlfriend bailed me out in pub – embarrassing!”
And Tom (@TomWasRight) tweeted: “I really enjoyed finding out that Barclays’ debit cards were down today. While in Asda. Trying to pay for my tea. Embarassing.”
Simon Wolf (@sgaw) said: “At least I know that it’s not just me being embarrassed in the supermarket. It looks like @Barclays are having a bit of a meltdown.”

Others saw the funny side.
“ATMs, debit cards and online banking all down for Barclays, you say? Awkward. I’d turn it off and then on again,” tweeted Nikki Coates (@NikkiCoates).
Reports of the debit card problems first surfaced on social media at about 1.30pm.
